Remember, the focus is to bond with this kid, not to pound your chest and put him in his place. The problematic student, the rest of the class, and you will all reap benefits if you can act dispassionately and manage to engage him. The student will begin to succeed academically and socially; your class will have a calmer, more congenial atmosphere for learning; you will confront your biases and become more empathetic.
If you teach for any amount of time, you’ll be confronted with an opinionated or inappropriate student who knows how to push your buttons. Engage him. Who knows, you may just end up with a new young friend.
What You Can Do Tomorrow
List attitudes or dispositions you detest. I struggle with kids who promote absurd conspiracy theories, exhibit racist or elitist attitudes, or spread malicious gossip. Whenever I have to deal with a kid who fits one of these categories, my patience gets tested. Compose your own list so you’ll be prepared when you encounter a student who will exercise your stamina.
Pinpoint the difficult students on your roster. You’ll certainly have a couple of students who yank your chain. Commit yourself to engaging those kids. You’ll serve their best interests, provide a positive atmosphere for your other students, and potentially make your job a thousand times more enjoyable.
Practice holding your tongue. Tomorrow, when a student does something that tries your patience, don’t react in the typical way. Mute your words and your body language. Breathe through the experience if necessary. This will help you in your relationship with this young person and can also be quite therapeutic.
Empathize. When you consider a young pot-stirrer, ask yourself: Why does she do or say such things? What’s his background? This simple empathetic moment could be a breakthrough in your ability to deal with and then eventually bond with this youngster.
